DFDS vessels repaired in winter season

DFDS vessels repaired in winter season

In this winter season, Remontowa S.A. had already completed the repairs of three ferries owned by the Danish shipowner DFDS: Athena Seaways, Ficaria Seaways and at the turn of January and February, also Princess Seaways ferry was undergoing repairs.

In addition to standard class renewal  works, we had performed a very large range of piping works in virtually every area of the ship. A wide range of works also included steel works. The shipowner had also commissioned the maintenance of the decks and the hull, which had been additionally repainted.

Princess Seaways is a ferry built in 1986 that can take 1,290 passengers on board, and also has a cargo line with a length of 1,410 meters.

Since its construction, the ro-pax has undergone a number of modernization works that allowed it to be adapted to current standards.

This time one of the most important tasks for the Mont St. Michel was the Alfa Laval BWTS installation. Other repair works we had carried out was the overhaul of four main engines and  overhaul of one auxiliary engine. We also had large scope of steel works in various parts of the ship, as well as pipeworks, electrical works, boilers and pumps inspection. Additionally we had performed the hull maintenance, funnels and car decks; we had cleaned a very large number of ballast, fuel and oil tanks; Numerous technical rooms were also subject to conservation. We also performed overhaul of both stabilizers.

The ferry Mont St. Michel called Shipyard previously in 2018. The vessel sails under the flag of France. She was built in 2002 in Dutch Giessen de Noord shipyard. The ferry is 173.4 m long, 29.1 m wide, 14.85 m high, and has a speed of 21.2 knots. The home port is Caen.

Pallieter dredger

Nansen Spirit tanker is the sister ship of Amundsen Spirit, which we had repaired at the turn of July and August. The scope of work on both ships was very similar. As part of the class renewal, among others, the Bow Loading System and three azimuth thrusters had been overhauled.

In addition, one of the main tasks was the Headway BWTS installation, the operation of which is based on electrocatalysis.

Also the existing logo of the Norwegian shipowner Teekay was changed to Altera on the vessel funnel.

The patron of the Nansen Spirit tanker(length 249 m, width 44 m) is Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian oceanographer, polar explorer and international social activist, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Drydock about… drydockings at Remontowa and more

The Drydock about… drydockings at Remontowa and more

In the last issue of DRYDOCK MAGAZINE as of September, there has been a batch of remote ship repair projects, as well as of repairs of large tankers and container ships, special surveys, drydockings and BWTS retrofits carried out on various ships in Remontowa Shiprepair Yard in Gdansk.

„While many tankers and containerships have been laid up around the world, it is still business as usual for some” – stressed in the magazine.

In the Area Review some Northern European updates from yards with Remontowa among them are mentioned while in the Analysis section tanker and containership repairs from our yard and some others are also discussed.

„COVID-19 is still having an impact on ship repair, but many yards have learned lessons from the first wave and are still managing to keep operating” – Mark Langdon pointed out in the Editor’s Comment.

GRANE R GOT NEW SPONSONS

GRANE R GOT NEW SPONSONS

In September, the project to retrofit the multi-purpose offshore vessel Grane R owned by Rohde-Nielsen A/S was completed at the Remontowa shipyard.

Grane R is a powerful offshore grab dredger and stone placing vessel capable of performing a variety of projects related to trench dredging and backfilling, boulder removal, rock installation and other offshore activities.

The most important task was to retrofit the ship with sponsons – the projections (buoyancy casings) from each side of the hull, used to enhance its stability. It is worth recalling that since the end of the 1990s Remontowa has modernisedseveral dozen ships in this way, but mainly Ro-Pax ferries. Installation of sponsons on ships such as the Grane R is rare. The implementation of this project involved additional modification of virtually all ship’s systems. The challenge was limited time for logistics and execution of works, but the retrofit project was completed as scheduled and according to the shipowner’s expectations. Prefabrication of the sponsons began even prior to the ship’s arrival in Gdansk. It is worth recalling that since the end of the 1990s Remontowa has modernized room, construction of a new sea chest for the BWT system, installation of a new sonar structure, modification of the sprinkler system, construction of a new technical room in the bow section of the hold, installation of a foundation on board for a new backhoe loader as well as prefabrication and installation of a foundation for the chute to be used for dumping aggregate. The azimuth thruster was inspected and overhauled under the surveillance of the service technician, and the boat landing ladder was mounted on the starboard side. Moreover, the hull with sponsons underwent maintenance and was painted, as well as all new constructions made by the shipyard.

On the Grane R, the shipyard installed two sponsons, each 1.6 m wide, containing six tanks on each side. The total weight of the entire assembled structure has reached 203 tonnes. Six new tanks were partially connected to the old ballast tanks, while the two anti- heeling tanks – one on each side – were supplied with a new pipeline of the ballast

system. All the new tanks have been fitted with probes and the connections to the measuring system have been prepared. Tank venting has been modified and the outboard outlets of the waste system and engine room systems from the bow section have been extended. The works in the hold included completing the rinsing system, assembling the brackets and making the gratings leading to the sewage ducts. Other works include the installation of new rails on the starboard side, modification of the fuel system in the engine

ATLANTIC STAR SET A RECORD

ATLANTIC STAR SET A RECORD

Longest and heaviest ship in the largest dock.

In August, Atlantic Star – one of the largest con-ro ships in the world – entered the Remontowa S.A. shipyard. It is one of five representatives of the G4 series, built in China between 2015 and 2017, which is an example of the largest ships of this type operating in ocean shipping. However, the Atlantic Star has set a record. She is the longest and the heaviest ship ever lifted in the largest floating dock of the Remontowa yard. The overall length of the ship is 296 m, width – 37.60 m and weight – 37 170 tonnes (without ballast). For comparison – the previous „record-breaking” ship docked here in 2017 – a Danish container ship – was „only” 293.18 m long and 32.18 m wide. In the Remontowa shipyard, the ships 300 metres long have already been repairedat quays. The challenge for the shipyard was to dock this ship, for which six months earlier a detailed preparation had begun. The dockmasters, supported by the knowledge of the shipyard’s general designer, developed a precise procedure for the safe placing and lifting of the ship in the shipyard’s largest floating dock. In addition to the standard technical analyses, the FEM (Finite Element Method) calculations were also carried out, which made it possible to determine very precisely the tensions affecting both the structure of the dock and the keel blocks, as well as the ship itself. The results of the analyses and the construction of the ship itself required very precise preparation of the substructure with a levelling tolerance of +/-5 mm and positioning the ship with a tolerance of +/- 10 mm, which was a great challenge given the size of the Atlantic Star. Such restrictive boundary conditions were then checked by the shipyard’s measurement services and the results of the analysis were approved by the Polish Register of Shipping. Finally, the ship was positioned with zero tolerance!

Calculations and simulations carried out several months in advance have ensured that the drydocking operation for the repair of such a large ship is completely safe. The Atlantic Star called at the yard for a standard dock and maintenance repair, including work on the steering system, replacement of sections of outboard pipelines, maintenance and painting work, overhauls of bottom-board fittings, as well as the scope of steel replacements.

Once the project was successfully completed ,the ship left the dock and shipyard safely in late August.

The ship is owned by the Italian GrimaldiGroup of Naples and operated by ACL. TheG4 ships, like their predecessors in the G3 series, are employed on the North Atlantic line, connecting northern Europe with North America. This is not the first visit of a ship owned by this shipowner, to the Remontowa shipyard. Over the last two years it hasrepaired and retrofitted with scrubbers a total of 11 container/ro-ro carriers, belonging to the Grande Lagos and Grande Marocco series.

Belgia Seaways Conversion

Belgia Seaways Conversion

Conversion of the Belgia Seaways ro-ro vessel, owned by Danish DFDS has been completed. The most important task of this project was the installation of a new ramp, which enabled communication between decks 2 and 3. However the installation of the ramp itself is only a small part of the work comissioned on the ship. She has  also undergone a class renewal, extended by a number of other works.

It is worth mentioning that the conversion of her sister- Gothia Seaways, which called the Shipyard in the first half of June, is currently underway.

CLV Spirit from Royal Boskalis

CLV Spirit from Royal Boskalis

Among others requiring projects in May, the CLV Spirit mobilization has been completed. This Cable Laying Vessel  owned by Royal Boskalis b.v. came to REMONTOWA on the beginning  of month 2020 and shortly after she was lifted by semi-submersible barge RemLift 25000.

Main repair tasks were steel works in tanks, overhaul of 4pcs. azimuth thrusters (2pcs. retractable) and 1 pc. bow thruster, hull and various equipment paint works, replacement of sewage treatment plant as well as mobilization works for cable laying project in Sweden.

Ile d’Ouessant mobilisation

Ile d’Ouessant mobilisation

At the end of March , the mobilisation of Ile d’Ouessant, commissioned by Luis Dreyfus Armateurs, was completed. The project was to change the configuration and equipment of the ship which entered the yard as Platform Support Vessel and adapting her to perform work intendent for cable layer, whose task is to lay and repair submarine telecommunication cables. It was a prestigious, very interesting and one of the most technically advanced projects carried at Remontowa S.A. at the turn of 2019 and 2020. The ship also underwent a classic dock and maintenance repairs. Exactly a year ago in March ‘19, „Ile de Batz” underwent similar mobilization in our Shipyard.
