Busy repair season at Remontowa

Remontowa SA shiprepair yard is busy with five conversions underway mid-August and several newbuildings, but ship repair sector is doing very well, too. The yard repaired 89 ships during the first half of the year with varying repair ranges. This activity is especially intense since April. On August 1, 15 ships were under repairs at Remontowa. The high season for repairs will last till Autumn, as docks are mostly reserved until October and will be tightly utilised.
In recent months Remontowa performed repairs on a couple of ships operated by Knutsen O.A.S. Shipping. There was a period recently, when no less than three ships of Knutsen were being serviced at a time at Remontowa. These were both repairs and conversions. The latter including brand new 35,000 dwt crude tanker Gijon Knutsen (delivered in May 2006 by Naval Gijon S.A.) being converted into a shuttle tanker by Remontowa. Summer at Remontowa will also see the entire fleet of the Finnish owner OY Langh Ship brought to Gdansk for repairs. Among other clients of Remontowa during summer are Novoship (Novorossiysk Shipping Co., Russia), with four vessels, including 40,727 dwt product and chemical tanker Tambov docked early August to leave the yard by mid-August.

Extensive range of repairs is also executed on ships from Greek market: bulk carrier Avra and 3073 TEU, 43,270 dwt container vessel MSC Brasilia of Tsakos Shipping & Trading.
One of recent notable jobs at Remontowa covers the 206 m long, panamax beam Humboldt Express of Hapag Lloyd. The ship, not a first-time visitor to Gdansk based yard, is being overhauled, repaired and docked for maintenance and will be able to return to trading by mid-August. The most interesting part of Remontowa's works on this ship was probably dismantling of the huge structure from the main deck. The owners decided to get rid of the travelling gantry with container crane. The whole structure, weighing some 450 tonnes, was taken off the ship's deck in two stages. The Remontowa owned heavy-lift sheerleg Rem-220 lifted the 100 t crane first. Then precisely planned operation of dismantling of the 350 t gantry structure was performed by two floating cranes working in tandem (the other being hired Maja flaoting crane). They approached the ship from both sides of containership's bow and lifted the heavy gantry simultaneously. The complex operation was accomplished smoothly and safely due to extensive preparations.
