Classification services agreement signed between Germanischer Lloyd and Remontowa's shipping company

Polish shipbuilder Remontowa Group has just opened a new chapter in its corporate history. In January 2008, its subsidiary shipyard Stocznia Polnocna (Northern Shipyard), Gdansk, launched the multi-purpose ship Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski, the first newbuilding for the concern’s own shipping department.

This not only underscores the expanding newbuilding activities of Remontowa, traditionally the market-leading ship repair company, it also reveals ambitions in the shipping industry. Gdanskie Linie Morskie SA, established by Remontowa, manages and markets the ship that was launched as Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski. The vessel was named after a well-known Polish engineer and political visionary. The crewing and technical management of the vessel is performed by another Remontowa's subsidiary - RSM (Remontowa Ship Management).

Remontowa group succeeded in acquiring a well known, renowned charterer for Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski - BBC Chartering, which operates the ship, delivered at the turn of September and October 2008, under the BBC Kwiatkowski charter name. Another Remontowa's Gdansk Sea Lines ship for BBC charter is BBC Gdansk, currently under outfitting at Northern Shipyard for delivery at the turn of 2008/2009.

Germanischer Lloyd monitored the design and construction of the innovative, REM-120 type multi-purpose cargo ships and classified the vessels BBC Kwiatkowski and BBC Gdansk.

Recently officials of REMONTOWA Group and Germanischer Lloyd have signed a framework agreement which covers the classification of and statutory attendance to the units of the Gdansk Sea Lines' sailing under GL class. This move strengthens the partnership between GL Remontowa. The agreement will result in a considerable reduction in administrative procedures, ensures stability and enables both parties to predict costs, income, workforce involved, etc. The five year agreement was signed at Remontowa premises on September 2, 2008.

Germanischer Lloyd is soon expected to provide Gdansk Sea Lines with ISM Code certification. Germanischer Lloyd surveyors are working at Remontowa on rather a regular basis, with the major Polish shiprepair yard serving a lot of ships under GL class, which is also owing to the fact that significant part of Remontowa's customers are German based shipping companies.

Germanischer Lloyd has been represented in Poland since the end of the 1970s - initially only with an outpost of the Berlin branch. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, three local surveyors were hired and the official founding of Germanischer Lloyd Polen Sp. z o.o. followed a year later. Today, GL is present at three locations: Szczecin, Gdansk and Katowice (with over 50 employees in total). In addition, in the Division Training Center in Szczecin new staff members find their feet on the way to become surveyors.
