Remontowa S.A. has recognised a complex problem which ship owners operating in SOx Emission Control Areas (SECA) are facing.

According to the regulation 14 of MARPOL, Annex VI, which has taken effect on January 1, 2015, in the SECA (the area including i.a. the North Sea, The Baltic Sea, and The Channel) the sulphur content of fuel oil used onboard ships must not exceed 0,1% as an effort to limit shipping emission in fragile environments. Alternatively, ships must fit an exhaust gas cleaning system. To keep up with newest regulations, the ships operating within the SECA must demonstrate compliance with stringent new exhaust emission standards. In order to comply, these vessels should have scrubber system installed aboard. The installation of such systems enables these vessels to continue to use heavy fuel oil with a high sulphur content, yet comply with the future sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions limit.

Given the number of scrubber installations completed already and early market entry, with leading or even pioneering position, the installation of scrubber systems may be regarded as one of our specialties.

Remontowa S.A. assists owners and operators with conversions, upgrading and retrofitting projects involving any equipment, upgrade design or system of choice brought by the yard’s customer.

In July and August 2013 we installed Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems aboard four DFDS Seaways ro-ro ships (on the picture below).

That operation was followed by another scrubbers installation in October 2013 on a large double – ended car – passenger ferry operated by Scandlines (the picture below).

In 2014 DFDS again entrusted to us scrubber systems installation onboard it's further seven ships. A new batch of DFDS vessels which received scrubber installations at Remontowa during 2014 comprised: two ro-pax vessels from Kiel-Klaipeda and Karlshamn-Klaipeda routes - Victoria Seaways and Optima Seaways, adding to five freight ro-ro ships: Britannia Seaways (Esbjerg - Immingham route), Suecia Seaways (Vlaardingen - Felixstowe route), Primula Seaways (Gothenburg - Brevik - Gent) and sisterships Freesia Seaways (Gothenburg - Brevik - Gent) and Begonia Seaways (Gothenburg - Brevik - Immingham).
At the beginning of April 2014 Victoria Seaways - the first ship from the ones mentioned above left the Remontowa shiprepair yard with the Alfal Laval's PureSOx scrubbers installed onboard.
We have retrofitted numerous ships with scrubbers so far, not only ferries / passenger ships, but also cargo ro-ro's, an LPG tanker and multipurpose cargo vessels.
To find detailed information about both projects mentioned above as well as other ones, please, check the news section.
