However having built in our track record many significant steel structures e.g. a 55 000 dwt floating dock in 1974 for the Götaverken shipyard in Göteborg, Sweden, then the Europe’s largest, the shipyard’s contribution to the Hibernia project in the late 1990s was our first serious involvement in the offshore industry area.

The Hibernia platform was the first fixed platform to be installed off the coast of Newfoundland. It consists a concrete gravity base structure (GBS) with an integrated topsides. The Hibernia topsides structure consists of 5 modules connected together to form an integrated topsides structure of total dry weight 38'000 tonnes. The modules were transported from their fabrication sites in South Korea, Italy, and locally in Canada to the load-out pier at Mosquito Bay, Newfoundland.
The modules were skidded from the transport barges to a construction pier where the modules were connected to form the integrated topsides structure. The topsides were subsequently lifted off the pier by means of two barges and transported along the fjord to the GBS.

The topsides were positioned over the GBS and the two structures were coupled together by simultaneously de-ballasting the GBS and ballasting the two barges. For safety execution of the lift-off, transportation and mating operations the barges had to be suitably prepared.
In order to provide the necessary capacity with respect to buoyancy and structural strength one of the barges was extended and both were reinforced internally and with deck tank structures, a total of 3'300 tonnes of extra steel. The construction, modifications and additions to the barges were performed at Remontowa S.A.
