Deck cargo ro-ro heavy lifters for ice navigation
ordered by Finnish owners

On April 7, 2006, Remontowa SA signed a newbuilding contract with Finnish partners. The order calls for the construction of two multipurpose deck cargo carriers (with an option for two further units) for Finnish, Turku based, shipping company Meriaura OY, on behalf of which, president Jussi Mälkiä and director Matti Torma signed the contract.
The first of contracted units is to be delivered in mid 2007, while the second unit is scheduled for December 2007 delivery. If the contract options are exercised, the further two units will be delivered in 2008.
The ships will be able to carry ro-ro, oversized and heavy cargo units on an open deck. The design, conceived at Remontowa's in-house ship design office in co-operation with the owners, features stern ramp, superstructure located fore, highest ice class hull reinforced for navigation in ice (with "ice-breaker like" shaped bow) and the following main particulars:

Length OA:    101.80 m
Length BP:   93.80 m
Breadth, moulded:   18.8 m
Depth to upper deck, moulded: 6.55 m
Draught, design, moulded 4.00 m
Draught, scantling:   4.60 m
Deadweight:    4600 t
Service speed   13 kn

- It is an important contract for us for many reasons - told Jan Paszkowski, manager of newbuildings market commercial office at Remontowa SA. - We strengthen our position in Scandinavia, getting a foothold at Finnish market at the same time - Paszkowski added.
The Finnish owner of the ships to be built at Remontowa SA, has an exclusive contract with Aker Yards, for the carriage of ship sections and blocks, as well as other steel structures from subcontractors and group member companies to main assembly and outfitting yards of the group. The ships to be delivered by Remontowa will be also carrying hull blocks or ring sections also ordered from subcontractors elsewhere in Gdańsk. However the ships will be especially useful for calls to seasonally freezing ports, such as Vyborg, where one of the Aker's subcontracting shipyards is located.
