Extensive damage repairs of a containership completed ahead of schedule

Damage repairs to container vessel Maersk Neuchatel, recently completed at Remontowa, constitute one of the single biggest of typical shiprepair projects in the company's history (not counting almost total reconstruction of ex Rocknes after ship capsizing and sinking).
Reederei Thomas Schulte GmbH & Co., owners of Maersk Neuchatel, have chosen Remontowa SA even despite the necessity to transfer the ship a long way from the site of casualty.

The loaded, 207 m long, 25 674 GT container vessel, on time charter to A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, grounded on July 20 off Tema, Ghana and spent considerable time grounded as initial refloating efforts failed, being hampered at times by swell running at the grounding location, which further contributed to ship's bottom damage. On the morning of 31 August 2007 a successful refloating attempt was carried out. The container vessel sustained widespread damage to its double bottom, with many punctures and crippling.
The extensive damage repairs required two dockings, apart in time, the first of which (the inspection, damage estimation and measurements taking one) took place a few months ago and the second one was finished early February.
Due to the fact, that wide parts of the bottom were damaged, the first one was not a typical docking, but extremely precise and careful operation with special precautions applied.

The ship (travelling from African port under own power, but with speed reduced to 14 knots) that arrived to the yard on September 25, 2007, was expected to leave the yard by the end of  February 2008, after replacement of estimated 1000 t of steel (in fact almost the whole bottom was replaced) and other repairs, and repairs of the propeller and checking and possible repairs to the shaft, as well as hull maintenance. However the extensive range of repairs has been completed 10 days ahead of agreed schedule. "I am pleased with the repairs, especially keeping the schedule and the quality of works. The yard has confirmed its renown on the European market" - said Hans Ludwig De Wries, shipowners' supervisor of the repairs.
